2006 ADD / ADHD Awareness Week
31 July to 6 August
Had a theme of "Do They Grow Out of It? - challenging young people and dynamic adults with ADHD, Asperger's & Autism".
The week's events held mainly in Wellington focused on:
- How to help these people realise their goals, and on issues for families, employers, GP's, practice nurses, Police, lawyers, schools, and Government policies.
- Where to from here: future trends in diagnosis and medical care.
- The ADD Assessment & Family Support Centre organised for a visit to Auckland and Wellington during ADD/ADHD Awareness Week 2006 by the leading Australian adult ADD/ADHD specialist, Dr Philip Bird, who is a consultant adult psychiatrist from Brisbane where he has one of the very few clinics focused on assisting adults. (Refer: www.gosforthclinic.com.au) No such clinic specifically for adults yet exists in New Zealand.
- Dr Philip Bird was a keynote speaker at the "Do They Grow Out of It?" public lecture and seminar organised by the ADD NZ Trust at the Home of Compassion, 2 Rhine Street, Island Bay, Wellington, on Saturday 5 August from 9am to 4pm.
- Dr Bird established at his Gosforth Clinic a private adult ADD/ADHD clinic in 2002 to provide an efficient and comprehensive assessment treatment programme for patients referred from their GPs. In addition to a range of medical diagnosis and treatments, the Clinic also provides opportunities for education assessment, financial coaching and a family education programme in addition to the individual treatment offered.
- By mid 2006 over 200 adults had already been treated at this Clinic. Many have had excellent results with a sustained improvement in quality of life.
- Dr Bird has produced a DVD on ADD/ADHD, which is available from the ADD Assessment & Family Support Centre – for a cost of $ 20 plus postage. (Also refer to Resources – Books & DVDs).
- Dr Bird has chaired regular meetings for Psychiatrists and GPs and has given regular media interviews in Australia. He has also been part of a team that has put forward a proposal to the Queensland State Government Correctional Services Department for an ADHD educational and treatment initiative with state prisons.
