Alternative Therapy

Alternative therapy treatments are promoted by various organisations, with most falling into one of a number of the following categories: dietary treatments, herbal treatments, programmes involving technological equipment, exercises, manipulations and meditation.

Double blind studies have demonstrated that only about 5% of children show benefits from diet and alternative therapy. Australian ADD/ADHD specialist Dr Green recommends that if a parent wishes to try a diet to see if behaviour is improved then they should use an exclusion diet under the supervision of a skilled dietitian.

There has been much research on sugar addictions, such as the research studies done by Dr Kathleen Des Maisons.

Other therapies that may assist are occupational therapy, social skills training and counselling.

Whatever treatment someone plans to use, it is suggested that there be an understanding of the options and risks involved. If the objective improvement is not achieved, treatment should cease.

It is important to obtain reliable information before becoming involved in any treatment.
